Lysine for Herpes: What the Research Actually Shows

Search any herpes forum and lysine for herpes will come up within the first few posts. It is the most widely recommended supplement in this category by a wide margin. It is also a good case study in how a plausible theory can outrun its evidence.

We sell supplements, so treat what follows with appropriate scepticism and check it yourself. But we are not going to tell you lysine is proven when it isn't.

Where the theory came from

Lysine and arginine are both amino acids, and they compete for the same transport pathways in the body. In the early 1970s, laboratory work in cell cultures found that herpes simplex replication appeared to depend on arginine, and that adding lysine to the culture suppressed it.

From that, a straightforward-sounding theory: raise lysine, lower arginine, and the virus has a harder time replicating. This is where the familiar advice about avoiding nuts, chocolate and seeds — all relatively high in arginine — originates.

The theory is genuinely reasonable as a hypothesis. The problem is what happened when people tested it in actual humans.

What the human trials found

Lysine has been studied in people since the late 1970s, so this is not an untested question. The results have been inconsistent.

Some trials, generally the smaller ones, reported that lysine supplementation reduced recurrence frequency or severity. Others, including placebo-controlled trials, found no meaningful difference. Reviews that have looked across the literature have tended to reach the same conclusion: the studies are mostly small, methodologically limited, use widely varying doses, and produce conflicting results — which is not a basis for a confident recommendation.

It is worth being precise about what "inconsistent evidence" means. It does not mean lysine has been proven useless. It means that after roughly five decades, the research has not managed to demonstrate a reliable effect. For a cheap, widely available supplement that would be easy to test properly, that is not an encouraging track record.

The dietary side of the theory has fared worse. The advice to avoid high-arginine foods rests on cell-culture findings that have not translated into good human evidence. There is no solid basis for telling people with herpes to give up nuts.

What lysine is definitely not

Two claims are worth ruling out directly, because both circulate.

Lysine is not an antiviral. It does not work the way acyclovir or valacyclovir work. Those drugs are activated by a viral enzyme and jam the machinery the virus uses to copy its DNA. Lysine is a dietary amino acid; whatever modest effect it may or may not have on replication conditions, it is not in the same category and should not be described as one.

Lysine does not touch latent virus. Between outbreaks, herpes sits dormant inside sensory nerve cells, not replicating at all. Nothing about the arginine-competition theory even applies to that state. No amount of lysine reduces the amount of latent virus you carry. Is it safe to try?

Lysine is generally regarded as well tolerated at commonly used doses, and it is inexpensive. Some people report gastrointestinal upset. High doses over long periods have not been well studied, and there are reasons for caution if you have kidney or liver problems. As always, run it past a clinician if you take prescription medication or have an existing condition.

So the honest framing is: probably low-risk, cheap, and unproven. Plenty of people take it and feel it helps them. Given the irregular natural pattern of recurrences, individual impressions are hard to interpret — outbreaks would have become less frequent for many of those people anyway. That is not a reason to dismiss anyone's experience, just a reason not to build a treatment plan on it.

If you want to try it, the reasonable approach is to keep taking whatever your clinician has prescribed, treat lysine as an add-on rather than a replacement, and log your recurrences so you have something better than memory to judge by.

Where we stand, and where our product stands

What has better evidence behind it

If the goal is fewer outbreaks, the interventions with real support are not on a supplement shelf:

  • Daily suppressive antiviral therapy. Substantially reduces recurrence frequency for most people, and reduces transmission risk to partners. This is the highest-value conversation to have with a clinician.
  • Episodic antivirals started at the first prodrome sign — the tingling or burning that often precedes lesions — to shorten an outbreak.
  • Managing sustained stress, which is among the best-documented triggers.
  • SPF lip balm if your outbreaks are oral, since UV exposure is a well-established trigger.
  • Protecting your sleep, and treating other illness promptly.

Lysine may belong somewhere on a list of things to try. It does not belong ahead of any of those.
